Event Description:

Visions and Vicissitudes: Beethoven’s “Hammerklavier” Sonata 200th Anniversary

This fall marks the 200th anniversary of the composition and first publication of Beethoven’s “Mt. Everest” for the piano -- the Sonata no. 29 in Bb Major, Op. 106 “Hammerklavier” (1819). Jon Sakata is excited to celebrate this occasion with a performance that embraces its iconic, challenging, even mythic stature with a "new" interpretation based on recent research of Beethoven’s (and his contemporaries’) use of the metronome by the Belgian keyboardist Wim Winters and German researcher Lorenz Gadient (the “Hammerklavier” Sonata was the only solo piano work that Beethoven himself designated metronome markings for). Sakata's reading gives new expressive and sonic longitudes and latitudes of, arc and horizon to, this epic work: "Where joy is a process of becoming through so many acts of ongoing contestation, struggle, resistance to... Festivity and proclamation ever-intwined with deep reflection and compassion; a harnessing and unleashing of energies that transit below, beyond, between, sweeping through the personal and collective, enacting human and non-human powers and dimensions of Nature-Cosmos. Visions and Vicissitudes. A voyage through late-Beethoven upon the tumultuous winds and sublime thought-forces of Spinoza and Nietzsche...joy, Joy, JOY!"
