Event Description:

Symbolism & Resistance: The American Flag in Contemporary Art
Dr. Cynthia Fowler, Emmanuel College

Lunchtime Presentation
Friday, October 4, 2019
12:30 pm

As a symbol of American values, the American flag has been used by contemporary artists to evaluate the extent to which these values have been realized in our country. Sometimes provocative, sometimes reflective, works that engage the American flag encourage us to think critically about a wide range of issues, from the meaning of patriotism to the history of racism in America. This talk will introduce a group of artists who challenge us to move beyond blind patriotism to a more realistic vision of America. In this lunchtime presentation, Dr. Fowler will discuss works by Dread Scott, William Pope.L, Sonya Clark, and ERRE, among others.

A light lunch will be provided, but space is limited.
Please RSVP by September 27 to gallery@exeter.edu
